On Thursday night, near the end of another of those 37-point Knick routs that felt as if it should count as more than a single loss, word came that the team’s owner, Jim Dolan, as well as the team’s president and its general manager had vacated their seats and disappeared underneath the stands of Madison Square Garden.

My heart leapt. Was it too much to hope they might gather in a conference room and all agree to fire each other?
Alas, it was not to be. Instead, Knicks management announced on Friday afternoon that they had fired another coach. So David Fizdale, like so many before him, bounds away a free man, paroled to enjoy a couple of gilded years living on the Dolan dole.

Knicks Fire Coach David FizdaleDec. 6, 2019
The Knicks’ president, Steve Mills, has survived many such purges, a bureaucratic lifer who could have survived the 1930s Kremlin. General Manager Scott Perry may or may not know what he’s doing, but he enjoys a fine contract, too. True change will only come to the Knicks when the querulous and glowering Knicks owner interrogates his two decades of failure and shows himself the door.

This is not to toss up a strong defense of Fizdale. He is a well-regarded basketball man, but his team gave the appearance in recent weeks of punching time cards and checking out. The other night against the Nuggets, Allonzo Trier trotted onto the court. Trier, if you gave up watching the Knicks long before he arrived last year, will shoot from anywhere in the Garden ZIP code, and he cultivates an aversion to playing defense.

Not long after coming on, he strolled under a pick and watched, bemused, as the fellow he was putatively supposed to defend gathered himself and sank a 3-point shot. Then he turned around and called for the ball.

There is a lot of this. The other team takes off down the floor and the Knicks’ defenders jog alongside like amiable company. Kevin Knox, who can give the appearance of a child awakened from a fine afternoon nap, is talented but often fails to remember that moving one’s feet is the key to playing defense.
Then there is Julius Randle, who signed on as the Knicks’ sort of star this past summer and labors under the unhelpful illusion that he is a 6-foot-8, 250-pound point guard. He dribbles into traffic and fumbles the ball and then hits the repeat button. There is not a high-quality scorer on this current team.
Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr, members of the NBA’s elite coaches, spoke in support of David Fizdale while taking digs at the laughingstock Knicks.

Unsolicited, Popovich, the Spurs headmaster, said the Knicks didn’t show patience with a young coach in a tartly worded endorsement of Fizdale, who was fired Friday. Mike Miller, the new interim Knicks coach, came out of the Spurs’ G-League system.
“I don’t know where the decision was made to fire coach Fizdale, but if it came from the top, it’s a case of mistaken identity,’’ Popovich told reporters. “He’s a fine, talented young coach with a great pedigree and it’s ridiculous to think you’re gonna bring in a young guy and after being there a minute-and-a-half, you expect him to fix everything that’s been wrong there for a long time. That’s petty unfair. It’s an old analogy. He got thrown under the bus. He’ll come out of it because he’s a great coach.”

Five years ago, Kerr rejected a verbal offer made by former Knicks president Phil Jackson. He joined Golden State and advanced to five straight NBA Finals, winning three. Kerr has fallen on hard times this season with the dynasty busted up.
When David Fizdale’s downfall with Knicks really began
“If I had gone to New York that would have been me like three years ago,’’ Kerr said when asked about Fizdale’s firing. “I’m well aware of that. So I think I made the right choice.’’
Fizdale sat in on Golden State’s pre-playoff practices in 2018 before accepting the Knicks job.
For the first two quarters, the Knicks (4-19) traded the lead with the Pacers. That commitment waned by the end of the third quarter, was resurrected early in the fourth but ultimately relented as the Pacers won 104-103 to end this trip 3-2.
Julius Randle had a chance to force overtime with foul shots but missed the second.
The Pacers were lucky to escape. The Knicks lost their ninth in a row.

Standouts: T.J. Warren (25 points) had no shut off button as he was looking for his shot and indefensible. Domantas Sabonis (19 points, 15 rebounds), Aaron Holiday (12 points, five assists), Jeremy Lamb (13 points) and Myles Turner (seven points, five blocks) all had their moments. T.J. McConnell (six points, 11 assists) kept the pace brisk with the second unit and Doug McDermott benefitted (16 points).
Xs and Os: Taj Gibson (two points) began defending Sabonis without help in the post and it produced four quick points. The Knicks had to commit an extra body which opened the perimeter for 3s. The Pacers were 6-for-14 in taking a 66-60 first-half lead. The best example was late in the second quarter when Sabonis anticipated the double, got the ball out quickly and two extra passes later Holiday spotted up for an open 3 that swished. The Knicks had no answer for that and seem lost on how to defend basic pick-and-rolls. Sabonis was 5-for-5 in the first half shooting. In the second half, they allowed McDermott to catch passes in rhythm off curls or in transition as he lined up 3s to push the lead to double digits. The Knicks’ bigs, namely Mitchell Robinson, stayed back and tried to late contest. Bad idea. The Pacers shot 12-for-28 from 3, or 43%.

Big save: Turner didn’t do much offensively, but his length preserved victory. He blocked Robinson’s bid to tie the score in transition and then denied Randle (16 points, 12 rebounds) who was awarded two foul shots. Randle missed the second one with 0.1 seconds left but suffice to say Turner’s presence meant everything. No shot-blocker, different outcome.
